These programs are broadcast on Appalshop’s WMMT 88.7 and archived online. ![]() The Knott Downtown Radio Hour, our monthly radio show, showcases traditional and original music performances recorded before a live audience at the School of Luthiery. ![]() Besides building museum-quality replicas of those early pieces, students can also learn to build, service and restore guitars, mandolins, and many other stringed instruments at a professional level. Luthiery is deeply rooted in Hindman, as far back as 1871 when the beautiful dulcimers of James Edward (Uncle Ed) Thomas first appeared. Our luthiers will help you make an informed decision about how to best repair your beloved instrument or bow, inform you of its value, and walk you through the process. The craftsmen who ply their trade in the workshop of Stamell Stringed Instruments are qualified professionals (with training from schools such as Boston University Program in Artisanry, University of NH Violin Craftsmanship Institute, and the North Bennett Street School). While our educational scope is global, bringing in students from as far away as Japan, it is also local, serving the needs of our nearest neighbors. The BA (Hons) Craft Practices course is a one-year programme designed to provide a route into professional practice in your chosen field or for progression onto postgraduate study.Nestled deep in the heart of the hard-hit coalfields, the Appalachian Artisan Center (AAC) at Hindman is dedicated to promoting the work of artists and craftsmen throughout the mountains of Kentucky via marketing and professional development assistance. Level 6: BA (Hons) Craft Practices (subject to validation) Yehudi Menuhin, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century was an early trustee of The Edward James Foundation, the charitable trust that supports the College. The College has a dynamic and creative music community that attracts students with a passion for music who are ready to channel that interest into skilled instrument making. The Foundation Degree Arts specialising in musical instruments teaches students the skills to enable making stringed instruments, both bowed and plucked including viola da gamba, violin and guitar.Īccess to industry experts also allows students to develop a range of communication skills including drawing and professional skills for contemporary crafts people, and students have the opportunity to attend events such as the London International Early Music Festival to showcase their instruments and network with sector professionals. Levels 4 & 5: Foundation Degree (FdA) in Musical Instruments The facilities at the College and knowledge and expertise of our tutors mean the internationally respected musical instrument programme is ideal if your goal is to set up an instrument-making workshop or to work in the trade. This programme is highly acclaimed for the proficiency and expertise of its graduates.
